FoodSwitch Data Dashboard

Making Complex Food and Sustainability Data Easier to Explore

  • In Progress

The problem

Large food datasets are difficult to interpret through spreadsheets, reports, and isolated statistics, especially for audiences with different levels of data literacy.

An in-progress dashboard design that transforms detailed packaged-food, nutrition, and sustainability data into a clearer interactive research experience.

Overview

FoodSwitch is a global-health initiative from The George Institute for Global Health focused on transparency across the packaged-food supply. Its data supports research into nutrition, product attributes, public health, and environmental impact.

The dashboard is being designed for researchers, public-health and policy professionals, food-industry stakeholders, organizations using FoodSwitch data, and consumers interested in healthier and more sustainable choices.

The experience uses progressive disclosure. Users begin with key indicators, continue into interactive charts, filters, category comparisons, trends, and distributions, and can then inspect detailed product-level information.

The work is ongoing. Final engagement, usability, comprehension, performance, and time-to-insight improvements have not yet been measured and are therefore not presented as completed results.

What I built

  • Structured the information architecture around overview, exploration, and detail levels.
  • Designed metrics, filters, comparisons, trends, distributions, environmental indicators, nutrition views, and product-level tables.
  • Selected chart patterns based on the analytical question each visualization needs to answer.
  • Designed responsive behavior, accessible color use, and clear loading, empty, and error states.

Highlights

  • Progressive overview, exploration, and detail structure
  • Shared filtering and food-category comparisons
  • Nutrition and environmental-impact visualizations
  • Responsive, accessible dashboard patterns
  • In-progress work with final impact not yet measured
