Overview

Wifaqul Ulama is a cross-platform Islamic mobile application for Muslims worldwide, with a primary focus on the UK and other high-latitude regions where generic prayer calculations fall short. It provides accurate daily prayer times using the PrayTimes calculation engine with the Wifaqul Ulama prayer methodology, alongside Qibla direction, Hijri calendar, Ramadan timetable, official moon-sighting updates, educational content, and an Ask a Scholar feature.

Prayer schedules are location-aware: GPS detects the user’s city, the TimeZoneDB API handles automatic timezone detection and Daylight Saving Time, and schedules refresh automatically when users travel — with adhan reminders via push notifications and home-screen widgets showing the next prayer.

As Senior React Native Developer I owned the frontend: prayer times screens, home dashboard, Qibla compass interface, Hijri calendar, reminder settings, preferences, Islamic content pages, navigation flows, and widget integration.

I integrated the PrayTimes calculation library with multiple calculation methods, wired TimeZoneDB for DST-correct schedules, implemented Firebase Cloud Messaging for prayer reminders, handled GPS permissions and location-based calculations, and optimized rendering, startup time, and API requests across Android and iOS.

What I built

  • Built the React Native frontend: prayer times, home dashboard, Qibla compass, Hijri calendar, reminders, preferences, and widgets.
  • Integrated the PrayTimes calculation engine with multiple calculation methods and automatic daily refresh based on user location.
  • Wired the TimeZoneDB API for automatic timezone detection and DST support — prayer times stay correct when users travel.
  • Implemented Firebase Cloud Messaging prayer reminders, GPS/location services, and performance optimizations across Android and iOS.
